Collector Edition: Beethoven Complete Piano Sonatas

Product Description

Written during three distinct periods of the composer's life, Beethoven's thirty-two sonatas are one of the great pinnacles of the piano literature, and are performed here by one of the twentieth century's finest pianists. From the ebullient early works to the forward-looking and often deeply thought-provoking late ones, Arrau's much-praised interpretation is just as fresh today as it waswhen first released.

To commemorate the 200th anniversary of Beethoven's birth in 1970, High Fidelity magazine published a comprehensive survey, in book form, of the composer's recordings that were available at the time. Their distinguished piano critic, Harris Goldsmith, wrote the sections on the piano music and concertos, and his opinions and insights are still valuable today. Of the Arrau cycle of the 32 sonatas, Goldsmith wrote the following:

"Following Arrau through the sonatas was a stimulating, sometimes perplexing experience: stimulating because of the pianist's mastery and profound insight into the music; perplexing because although I am a confirmed adherent to an opposite musical polarity (e.g., the Schnabel/Toscanini axis) I kept finding myself fascinated and drawn into Arrau's interpretations in spite of myself. Granted, I look for metrical severity and Arrau's inflected phrasing is sometimes stretched to theoretical limits; I also gravitate toward fast tempos and headstrong brio,... Read more

I will confine my comments to the remastering. I already owned these recordings on lp and CD. I was hoping that the Decca reissue would improve the boxy claustrophobic ambience that plagues most of the sonata recordings (the Phillips set also contains the concertos with Colin Davis which are a sonic improvement over the sonatas).
Many early stereo recordings have been issued from labels such as Sony and Supraphon using 20 or 24 bit DSD remastering. Not here, however. This sounds identical to the Phillips set. If you own that set there is no reason to get this unless you really want the 1952 Diabelli.

An addendum--after posting this review someone emailed me to let me know the phillips set was already a 24 bit remastering. I pulled out the box, and there is a sticker on the front of the box that clearly states this. It goes to show that there is only so much that could be done with limited originals. perhaps is Pristine Audio took a crack at it...
    I will... Read more
